Knife Care and Maintenance

At Damascus Knife USA, we believe your knife should last a lifetime—and beyond. Our handcrafted Damascus steel blades and premium natural handles deserve proper care to preserve their beauty, performance, and legacy. Follow these simple steps to keep your knife in top condition for generations.

? Washing Your Knife

Should I put my Damascus Knife USA blade in the dishwasher?

Always:

  • Hand wash with warm water and mild dish soap
  • Dry immediately with a soft towel
  • Avoid abrasive pads (these can scratch the blade or remove the beautiful Damascus etching)

? Caring for Wood Handles

Our wooden handles are as unique and handcrafted as our blades. To prevent drying, cracking, or splitting:

  • Treat regularly with a natural Danish oil (such as linseed oil) or food-safe knife oil
  • Apply a small amount with a lint-free cloth or paper towel
  • Allow oil to soak in for 20–30 minutes, then wipe away any excess
  • Ensure the handle is completely dry before storing your knife

Tip:

? Caring for Damascus Steel & Carbon Blades

Damascus steel is equal parts performance and artistry. Over time, your blade may develop a natural patina—a darkened layer that helps protect against rust and adds unique character.

  • Always hand wash and dry immediately after use
  • Avoid prolonged contact with acidic foods (like lemon, tomato, or vinegar), which can cause staining
  • Do not store your knife in its leather sheath for extended periods—use a wooden presentation box or keep it in a dry place

? Removing Rust

If your blade develops rust, don’t worry—it’s treatable! Start with the gentlest method and work your way up as needed:

  1. Use a soft scrub pad and mild soap to gently rub with the grain of the blade
  2. If needed, try a powdered scrubbing compound with the pad
  3. For stubborn rust, use a new pad and more scrubbing compound
  4. Only as a last resort, use a rust remover—be cautious, as this may fade the etched Damascus pattern

?️ Oiling Your Knife

While not required after every use, oiling your knife regularly helps prevent discoloration and rust.

  • Mineral oil
  • Camellia oil
  • Vitamin E oil

These oils create a protective barrier and keep your knife looking and performing its best.
